List of shipwrecks in 1909 includes all ships sunk, foundered, grounded, or otherwise lost during 1909.

January

• FV Pendeen ( United Kingdom) lost in a gale. A search by the St Ives Lifeboat did not find any wreckage^[1]

23 January

• RMS Republic ( United Kingdom) and SS Florida ( Italy) collided. A total of six people killed (3 passengers 3crew), Republic sank on 24 January. Over 1500 rescued.

February

12 February

• SS Penguin ( New Zealand) struck Toms Rock in the Cook Strait and sank with the loss of 85 passengers and crew. Thirty survivors.
• SS Australia ( Belgium) collided with a sailing ship and sank off Alboran, Mediterranean Sea.^[2]

21 February

• East coast drifter Renown went aground at Penzance railway station, Cornwall, UK after missing the harbour mouth in a fresh breeze and rough seas. The lifeboat Cape of Good Hope passed a wire rope from the drifter to the Albert pier where hundreds of people hauled the ship off, and she was escorted into harbour.^[3] 3 February according to Carter.^[4]

April

8 April

• SS Mahratta ( United Kingdom) ran aground on Goodwin Sands, broke in half two days later and wrecked. One crew member committed suicide.

May

13 May

• Palomares ( Belgium) Abandoned in the Gulf of Finland. Later salvaged, repaired and sold.^[5]

Unknown date

• Schooner Loango near St Ives, Cornwall, United Kingdom^[6] Four crew rescued^[1]

June

20 June

• Louise ( Belgium) foundered 28 nautical miles (52 km) off Ventimiglia, Italy.^[7]

July

15 July

• HMS C11 ( Royal Navy) sunk in collision with Eddystone ( United Kingdom) off Cromer. Three survivors

27 July

• Last sighting of SS Waratah  Australia which was due to reach Cape Town on 29 July. No trace ever found, over 750 passengers and crew lost.

August

5 August

• SS Maori ( United Kingdom) wrecked near Llandudno, Cape Town with 32 crew killed.

• RMS Lucania ( United Kingdom), caught fire at Huskisson Dock at Liverpool. Sank at her moorings and later sold for scrap.

September

5 September

• Eduard Bohlen ( Germany) ran aground off of Namibia's Skeleton Coast in a heavy fog.

November

24 November

• Barque Alf ( Norway) ran aground on Haisborough Sands and was wrecked. Crew of 16 rescued by the Cromer lifeboat Louisa Heartwell.

December

2 December

• Screw Collier SS Whitewood  United Kingdom Left Hull 2 Dec 1909 bound for Bremen. Not heard of after this date.

3 December

• SS Ellan Vannin  United Kingdom Isle of Man sank in Liverpool Bay. All 36 passengers and crew killed.

Date unknown

• SS Congress  United Kingdom swamped by a wave off St. Ives, Cornwall. Three people swept overboard were rescued.^[1]
